Paying a Nanny What She's Worth

If this is your first time looking for a nanny, you might be wondering what to pay. This is a tough one because there’s no set standard rate of pay. It really depends on a number of things including:
  • the amount of responsibility the nanny will be given;
  • where you live;
  • whether you’re going to offer additional benefits or just straight salary;
  • the amount of experience the nanny has;
  • whether you’re going to hire the nanny on a full-time, or part-time basis;
  • whether your intentions are to hire a nanny for the long term, or only for a short duration (i.e. the summer months)
If there are other people in your neighborhood familiar with hiring a nanny, ask them what rate of pay they think is fair. Starting a nanny on the lower end of the scale is okay as long as you leave opportunities for periodic assessment and incremental raises. Online nanny agencies, like Nannies4hire.com, will be able to give you an idea of what’s considered a reasonable rate of pay. As well, you can do an Internet search for current information on what people are paying nannies in your state, city, or town. Online nanny agencies will always remind you that their profiled nannies are professionals, with the education and experience that comes with that. As a result, they should be paid what they’re worth.
