What type of background checks should be conducted concerning nanny jobs?

Nanny Jobs and Background Checks

Unless you are well-acquainted with the person whom you've chosen to fill the nanny job, it is important that you do a background check. For many employing families, a background check is done regardless of how well they know the nanny. Background checks are typically not conducted until a nanny job has been offered and excepted. Once this has occurred, you or your nanny agency can then run a background check, making sure that the nanny job will not begin until the background check is complete and clear. Background checks typically include the following:

  1. Social Security Number Trace-This will give information on the potential employee's addresses over the last seven to ten years.
  2. Statewide Criminal Checks-While only the FBI has a national criminal database which isn't open to the public, a state wide felony convictions search can be conducted.
  3. County Criminal Search-In many cases this is done by accessing courthouse records.
  4. Department of Motor Vehicles Search-A DMV search is an essential part of a background check even of the nanny's job will not involve driving the children to and from other places.
  5. Sex Offender Registries-Most states typically maintain their own databases, but you can also do a nationwide search on-line.
  6. Credit Reports-Use a reputable credit report agency to handle this.
